UZ Arts presents the work of twenty-one European artists who have been resident at Sura Medura in Sri Lanka since 2006. The programme includes performances, installations, video and visual arts.
The Sura Medura International Residency has been welcoming European artists to live and work in Sri Lanka since 2006. Artists are invited to make work that could only be made in Sri Lanka. Much of it is site-specific and engages directly with the public as co-creators – local communities provide the inspiration for the work or are essential for its delivery or presentation.
The Sura Medura Arts Centre was created after the tsunami of 2004 hit Sri Lanka. Artist/producer Neil Butler and a group of friends who had survived the tsunami established the Hikkaduwa Area Relief Fund with the then Lord Provost of Glasgow Liz Cameron as patron. Initially they worked on rebuilding the local fishing fleet and then a community centre –Chandrasevana. Sura Medura evolved from these initiatives, enabling artists from all over the world to engage with the unique environment and communities of Sri Lanka.
Sura Medura, managed by Glasgow-based UZ Arts, continues to create residencies and events in Hikkaduwa and Colombo and many Sura Medura artists have also appeared at the Colombo Art Biennale, which Sura Medura and UZ Arts Director Neil Butler has been involved with since its inception as artist, curator and co-Director.

“Moving Out” symposium: 21 August, 13.00-18.00
A symposium, with performances and installations by Sura Medura artists, will focus on accessing and delivering international collaborations, publicly-engaged practise and the impact of international residencies on artists’ work and sense of cultural identity. It will offer a crucial guide for artists and producers seeking to work outside both their home country and their comfort zone.
Event sponsored by the European network INSITU and the Scottish network Articulation. The Symposium is free but ticketed – bookings: info@uzarts.com
The symposium will be preceded by a workshop led by artists Matteo Lanfranchi, Juri Cainero, Stephen Hurrel and Samson Ogiamien on Sunday 20 August in Glasgow. More info at uzarts.com
